Dextran Sulfate Standard Grade refers to the sodium salt of sulfated dextran with a high average molecular weight (>500,000 Da). It is a polyanionic derivative of dextran, produced by esterification of dextran resulting in 16-19 % sulfur content.

Dextran Sulfate Sodium Standard appears as a white to very slightly yellow powder that is highly soluble in water. It is known for its strong negative charge density and is often used as a reference or standard dextran sulfate in biochemical applications.

Research: Dextran Sulfate Sodium Standard is used to induce colitis in animal models.

Handling & Compatibility

Handling: Hygroscopic and clumpy if exposed to moisture, cap the bottle tightly. Weigh quickly or in a low-humidity environment. The fine powder can be electrostatic; anti-static measures or dissolving in a weighed container is helpful.
Compatibility: Forms precipitates with polycations and will also precipitate in presence of high concentrations of bivalent cations.

Key Properties

Solubility: Freely soluble in water and salt solutions; for example, up to 20–30% w/v in water yields a clear, slightly viscous solution.
Reactivity: Forms insoluble complexes with polycations like DEAE-dextran and can also chelate cationic proteins.
Viscosity: Medium to high – a 10% solution is quite viscous, similar to 10% dextran of same size.
Stability: Dry powder is stable for years if kept dry.
Available in smaller packs (100 and 500g) and bulk quantities (> 5kg).
