Dextran 70 is a biocompatible polysaccharide with medium-range molecular weight, offering enhanced stability in biomedical formulations. It is generally widely used in plasma volume expansion, drug delivery, and hydrogel development.

It is a medium range (average Mw ≈70,000 Da) which is a highly purified, non-toxic, branched glucose polymer produced via fermentation of Leuconostoc bacteria. Dextran 70 consists of α-D-glucopyranosyl units with predominantly 1,6 glycosidic linkages and a small percentage of 1,3 branches, resulting in a very water-soluble, white to off-white powder.

Widely used as a plasma volume expander – Dextran 70 is infused to treat hypovolemia, increasing blood volume and reducing blood viscosity.
Included in skincare products as a hydrating polymer to retain moisture on skin.
Added to freeze-drying formulations for vaccines and biologics to stabilize proteins and liposomes as its larger size provides a protective glassy matrix.
Does not penetrate capillary walls easily (due to size), giving it a sustained volume expansion effect.

Ophthalmic: A key ingredient in artificial tears and eye lubricants (usually 0.1% Dextran 70 with 0.3% hypromellose) to protect and lubricate the cornea.

Handling & Compatibility

Storage: Powder is slightly hygroscopic; avoid exposure to humid air to prevent clumping. When preparing large volume solutions, add powder slowly to solvent with vigorous stirring to ensure even dissolution.
Sterilization: Sterilize solutions by membrane filtration (0.2 µm) rather than autoclaving to avoid Maillard browning or degradation. Molecular weight may decrease slightly if autoclaved. Gamma irradiation of the dry powder can be used as dextran tolerates gamma sterilization well due to its stable glycosidic bonds.
Compatibility: Highly compatible with saline, glucose, and other common infusion fluids. It can be mixed with other colloids or crystalloids as needed. Avoid mixing with strong bases or strong oxidizers which could degrade the polymer. In formulations, Dextran 70 can be combined with other polymers like hydrolyzed starch or PVP.

Key Properties

Form: Amorphous powder, white to off-white.
Solubility: Water-soluble. Insoluble in lower alcohols.
Viscosity: Very high intrinsic viscosity due to long chains.
Stability: Very stable in dry form.
Autoclaving of solutions (e.g. 5–10% w/v) is feasible with minimal degradation, although filter-sterilization is preferred to preserve molecular weight.
Resistant to enzymatic breakdown by human amylases (due to branching), and stable over a broad pH range (pH 4–8) in solution.
Branching: Slightly lower branching frequency relative to lower Mw dextrans.
Available in smaller packs (25-200g) and bulk quantities (> 5kg).
